and to dump 40 million people to wait in the energy ro emergency room. let's look at the some of the latest polling in the wake of wednesday's debate. this afternoon pew released a poll that showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days sibts the debate and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other polyp that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, edi

the weekend we asked him about his preparations for this debate on thursday and what kind of energy he expects the vice president to bring. this is what he had to say. >> well, i guess we don't have the sound, which makes for a funny joke, here's what he had to say, quiet. he said something, ron. can you tell us what he said? >> reporter: basically he expects vice president biden come out like a cannonball and maybe perhaps in reaction to the president's performance at the debate last wednesday. so paul ryan has acknowledged that joe biden has far more experience assist a debate than he does. joe biden has been in public life for 40 years. paul ryan is not a newcomer by any stretch of the imagination. he has seven terms in the u.s. house under his belt. i think his posture over the weekend, he went to a pumpkin patch with his family. he's trying to stay focused but trying to relaxed. one of the things etsd is his key for him is to be himself. he knows what to believe, and he needs to articulate that to the american people in the debate in kentucky on thursday. >> thank you, ron. we greatly app

the things the campaign has spent so much time and energy prosecuting over the past several months. he didn't talk about bain, how mitt romney made his money, didn't talk about the middle class as much in that context as i expected. he didn't talk about the 47%. i know when you're the president you want to be careful not to swing down, but -- >> how about just saying why you're president, why you wanted to be president, why you made the decisions you made, why you didn't want to have 40 million people sitting in the emergency room. >> i think he tried to do that, but i don't think he did it as well as he would have liked, and certainly they're going to take a new approach next time. mitt romney just came to play. mark is right. >> an interesting thing, mark, back to that again, romney seemed to know it was free form. it was like a city basketball game. you know, winners get the ball. every time you make a good shot. it's not like in the nba where you have to turn the ball over. he knew if he kept shooting, he could keep hitting and control the ball, and the ref in this case, lehrer, tried t
